IN STYLE

Keeping in style a quite but eventful time was had on Heathers birthday what with presents galore and well wishes from all around she had a great time. She had a visit from Jan the Hairdresser and her mother then a couple of visitors spent time talking to her. Yet the highlight was a telephone call from cousin Judy in Scotland.

VERY ENTERTAINING

To get the summer of in the right mood Stuart the Entertainer came and played all those summer hits that we enjoy and love, "roll out the barrel" " run rabbit run" "summer holiday" and several renditions of "Happy Birthday" as we had just celebrated 1 and were coming up to another. Stuart always goes down well as he gets everyone involved. He has also got CD's of his songs so the you can play them when he not here. We wondered how this would be, no problems everyone was up and dancing.

CIMAC

As most of you are aware here at Ashdown we like to do our bit for charity and in the post we have supported Brainwave, Cancer Research UK, Downs Syndrome Association and The Rotary Club but between April and October we shall be supporting the people of Kabul, Afghanistan who are the 9th poorest country, as you have all seen in the news the country has over the past been ravaged by warring factions and it's the people who suffer. I have been contacted by Captain E L W Winchester who is the CIMIC (CIvil MIlitary Cooperation) officer and they are trying to help the local population in several ways, they have removed raw sewage from the streets, built a bridge to stop children being hit buy cars also they have provide wells for drinking water. Yet its the smaller item how you can help, the locals need Pens, paper, School satchels, rubbers toothpaste and clothing for all conditions as the weather ranges from-25C to + 38C so they do need your help. The Royal Mail will send a parcel weighing 2kg or less for free, so look around your wardrobe, find some things you will not wear and instead of the clothing bank this time wrap them up. Go to your local shop and tell them what you are doing see what they can give you, forget those new shoes you have a pair that will do go and get some rubbers, pens and chalks, its surprising how much your 2kg is. to date we have sent 12 packets and there are more to go soon. So get collecting and take your parcel addressed to,

MYSTERY TRIP

Of they went on the mystery trip where the format is ask everyone do we turn left or right and in some cases my side , other side. After the 3rd time of passing Ashdown as everyone was saying left including the staff the gardener thought we were having a turn, we waited until further a field before the instructions and so we visited Kenton, Exeter several times, Bovey Tracy and final for an Ice Cream at Labrador Bay, they need that after all that left and right.

 COCKINGTON TRIP

The sun was out, the sky was bright and everyone was ready for the day out to Cockington but we did keep one eye out just in case. Everyone enjoyed the Devon Cream Tea never mind the diet for that day with the highlight being the horse and cart ride to the manor house for coffee and back. Then on to the demonstration of glass blowing and a walk through the rose gardens.

ENJOY COFFEE

After a few weeks absence Heather felt the time was right to start attending the Methodist Church Coffee Morning so along with an escort they made there way there and Heather met up with old friends and chatted for some time over coffee and biscuits.

THE KOI REFURBISHED HOME

For some time now the ornamental Koi pond that brings so much pleasure to people as they watch the fish swim around has had a slight problem of not only a leak well in fact 5 but also we could never keep the water clear so it was decided to do something about it. We were told about Ross at Aquatics South West who has a good reputation for pods and tanks so on a bright day he set up his equipment and started by draining the pond, re-lining it and re-filling it. He thought it would all take about 8 hours to do the job but he had to come back the next day to finish of, well done Ross as the pictures show the fish are very happy with there new home.

MR SMOOTH

One thing can be said for Stuart he never misses an opportunity to pose so when Graham from Frog Island Brewery came down to take part in a local charity golf day he made sure he enjoyed himself touring the area, next time watch out for the cool shades and the bling.

CHARITY GOLF DAY

For the past 8 years or so Ashdown has sponsored a hole at The Rotary Club, Teignmouth Branch annual Golf day and this year was no exception, The brave team of Dave Rogers representing Ashdown, Nick Brenner representing Teignmouth Pier and Graham Cherry from Frog Island Brewery who donated some beer to the silent auction upheld there reputation by being leaders in the club house for 4 hours before some of the late starters come in, the team eventually came a creditable 6th place 1 outside the prizes not bad as 50 teams took place. Well done Dave, Nick and Graham who have already talked about there strategy for next year.
